Elia- When people ask you to describe your current
music, what do you tell them?

Cynthia- Blood Ruby creates female-fronted atmospheric alternative music omewhere in the vein of dream pop, ethereal and neoprogressive rock. The band's textured, layered sound takes listeners on an ambient, often dark, and sometimes epic journey
through drifting landscapes of emotion, strange places, and complex characters.

Elia- How about some history, did you ever play, sing, or anything else, in any other bands before If so, who ?

Cynthia- Margaret and I were in a previous, unnamed, all-girl band for many years before she joined Blood Ruby. Thomas has been involved with a number of bands over the years, including Wall and Woodford, and Unit Three.

Elia- would you say that, rather than threatening music, the Internet could actually be saving it?

Cynthia- The Internet is only a threat to the old music industry paradigm. Because the big players aren't flexible enough to make it work for them, the Internet is creating a level playing field for Indie musicians and labels. Anyone can get their music heard by thousands without playing a single live show or having a single song on FM radio. On the other hand, there are less powerful filters to weed out the mediocre, but an exponentially higher number of them, so it takes a lot more work for listeners to find the hidden gems.

Elia- Very true,.... How would you sum up your music activity ?

Cynthia- Right now, our major music activity consists of writing and recording songs for our forthcoming debut CD.

Elia- you have a great website, do you visit it regularly ?

Cynthia- Bloodruby.com is updated frequently with new music, information about the band, and links. It also features contact nformation, a guestbook, newsletter subscription sign-up, and yahoo! Group fan club information.

Elia- Do you ever feel the pressures of having to re-invent yourself--musically, etc.?

Cynthia- It's not really a pressure per se, but we do like to challenge ourselves to push the envelope of our sound. We each have such diverse influences and tastes that we can bring to bear on any one song. We love to throw these into the mix. We have songs that employ elements of 60s Mod, Opera, Lounge, R&B, Jazz, Electronica, Folk, Prog, New
Age, Reggae, Asian, Goth, Pop, Funk, Bossa Nova, Blues, Lo-Fi, etc. The tricky part is retaining stylistic unity overall.

Elia- Please talk about your instruments ,what else do you use ?

Cynthia- We have a comprehensive list of equipment on our website at Bandgear

Elia- If it's live do you use the same equipment as in studio ?

Cynthia- We aren't performing live yet. All of our songs have many more tracks and instruments than we have musicians, so it will certainly be a challenge to strip down our songs for performance, but hopefully we will end up with some interesting live versions from the effort. We're looking forward to it, in fact!

Elia- Favourite city ?

Cynthia- The best city in Connecticut is New Haven, hands down !

Elia- Are you going to develop the sound in any new direction?

Cynthia- With each song, we're moving in a new direction. It's not a conscious decision; it's what happens when three different musicians contribute. That said, we do often say things like, "let's do something edgier," or "let's do something a little More stripped-down." But it's not an overall game plan, just a plan for a particular song. The overall direction comes out of the individual songs, and it's a lot of fun to see it evolve, almost on its own.

Elia- What are your future plans?

Cynthia- Once our CD is ready, we will start shopping labels for a distribution or recording deal. If this doesn't happen, we'll self-release. None of us have pie-in-the-sky expectations of major label success, and with the current climate of the music industry, it's just as well. We just want to do
what we love, and share it with others.

Elia- Cynthia thank you for your time, visit us from time to time and let us know how you people are gettin' on

Cynthia- Thanks to you too, sure we will

Song Descriptions

Midsummer Fires
A tribute to the pagan-based Scandinavian traditions of Midsummer, this song, like the bonfire it depicts, slowly builds into a blazing inferno.

Remains of the Day
A richly atmospheric tribute to the transcendence of memory over matter.

Sleepwalk
An undercurrent of spookiness and tension runs beneath this song about living life to its fullest. Savor even the pain, because simply to feel is divine.

He's Lost
A song exploring the emotional paradox of codependency.

Babel Babel
A complex, layered song that keeps getting higher & deeper until the delightfully trippy "spaced-out" ending.

Shan Shui
Inspired by Chinese landscape scrolls & sung partly in Mandarin Chinese (or, more accurately, an approximation of it!).

Underwater Place
The aquatic instrumentation & lyrics were inspired by an early childhood experience with swimming (or lack there of).

Centro
Organically structured and impressionistic song about traveling by rail.

The Night Tide
Sweet and soothing, then explosive.

Bone Garden
Dark, heavy, brooding and apocolyptic.

Some Winters
Minimalistic and introspective song about emotional survival.

The Waiting Hours
A song haunted by loneliness.

The Edge of the Map
Radio-friendly adult alternative with folk-pop
underpinnings.

Just got a chance to give a listen to the samples you had for downloading, and I am really enjoying them!

One thing I did not see on your website (perhaps I overlooked it) was where to purchase your CD's.

Thanks for the interview and some great music! :D
